Nature & hiking

Helvetesfallet
For those interested in impressive nature with flowing water and steep rock faces, Helvetesfallet is an excellent excursion destination.
Helvetesfallet literally translates to Fall of Hell. From the thirty-meter-high rock walls, the river Ämån plunges into the narrow gorge. Especially during the spring flood, the forces of nature are so strong that the ground seems to tremble.
Look carefully around you when you visit Helvetesfallet. Nesting birds like to build their nests on ledges along the rock walls, but unusual and rare lichens, mosses, and ferns can also be seen in abundance.
Undoubtedly, this is a place you should not miss.
Storstupet
Storstupet literally means ‘the great abyss’. An old railway bridge, built in 1902, stands here. It is also a fantastic spot for all photography enthusiasts. The canyon walls consist of red sandstone, reddish-brown porphyry, and grey-black diabase. When the sun shines, it creates beautiful colors.

Around lake Siljan
Lake Siljan is the largest lake in Dalarna, and besides Orsa and Nusnäs, there are a number of other nice places worth visiting. Such as the traditional Leksand, home to the knäckebröd factory and the cool outdoor and water park Sommarland.
Or the authentic Tällberg, Mora, or the bustling city of Rättvik. Here you will find the Långbryggan, a long pier of 628 meters from which you have a breathtaking view of the lake. In good weather, it is lovely to relax on the sandy beach along the shore and enjoy a swim in the gently sloping water.
Are you looking for a bit more adventure? Then the Rättvik toboggan run absolutely must be on your list of outings. Riding around the lake takes about a day in total.

Culture & local

Dalarna Horse Factory
Of course, you won’t go home without the region’s signature souvenir: the world-famous Dalarna horse. Just a half-hour drive from the campsite, you’ll find Grannas A Olssons Hemslöjd. The only true factory for these horses is located in Nusnäs on Lake Siljan, and you can visit it. You can see the entire production process step by step. It takes no less than two weeks to make a horse, and 8 to 10 people work on it. It is all handmade, so every horse is unique. Children can also paint a horse themselves for a fee, and afterwards, you can even score a real one in the souvenir shop.
The Dalarna horse is an ancient Swedish symbol of strength, wisdom, courage, and dignity. Since the 17th century, the Dalarna horse has been produced as a byproduct of furniture making. From the 18th century onwards, the horse has been painted with floral motifs and sold as a toy. The painting of these typical floral motifs is a long-standing folk art that can be found everywhere: on cabinets, various pieces of furniture, ceilings, and interior walls.
